Alexandra Mid-Rise
This mid-rise development is prominently located at the corner of Yonge Street and Alexandra Boulevard in in the heart of the Lytton Park community in north Toronto. The site is currently occupied by two low rise masonry buildings including a former funeral home and is adjacent to Snider Parkette. The proposed building takes inspiration from architectural gestures of the former funeral home, most notably the elegant stone arch of the entrance. The mid-rise built form is conceived with a timeless expression. The geometry is simple but rich in texture, detail, and materiality. The arch motif is replicated in the corner volume and the articulated cut stone retail base is contrasted with textured brick piers on the floors above. The building design introduces a diverse range of 127 generously sized units. The 31 units in the existing apartment building will be replaced within the proposed development.
As part of the development, the historic Alexandra Gates marking the corner and entry to Alexandra Boulevard will be restored to their original splendour and prominence within the local community fabric and public streetscape. The public park will be expanded through a parkland dedication, and its visibility and accessibility will be enhanced through a 3m publicly accessible open space and walkway from Yonge Street.
