Danforth Mid-Rise
Located along Danforth Avenue in the east of Toronto, this 11-storey modern collective living midrise building inherited the local indigenous cultures and heritage brick buildings into its very own architectural expression. The project integrates the existing 2-storey brick heritage building into the design of the brick podium, unifying the old and the new. The juxtaposition of materiality is explored in the relation of commercial at grade, with brick vs. purpose built rental above, with metal panels and fins.
The existing 2-storey brick heritage building is converted into a double ceiling height commercial space. Amenity spaces have been designed for the residents including shared sitting space with stepped seating, shared lobby space, community theatre on the 2nd and 3rd floor, two outdoor amenity courtyards with light wells, as well as further indoor and outdoor amenity spaces on the roof top. A new driveway connection has been designed at the rear of the building to merge with the existing laneway, turning the rear back of house laneway expression into an urban and inviting space. This project incorporates geothermal heating and cooling systems, significantly reducing the energy footprint and environmental impact of the building.
