Gibbard District
The redevelopment of the disused site of the Gibbard Furniture Factory (Canada’s oldest furniture factory, closed in 2009), revitalizes and expands the urban boundary of historic downtown Napanee. This sensitive redevelopment focuses on incorporating the heritage character of the site, while also including new sustainable strategies and technologies to create a net-zero condition. In terms of technologies, the project incorporates a geo-thermal loop and leverages an adjacent waterfall for hydroelectric energy. The site’s sustainability is also encouraged through lifestyle; encouraging walkability, the site incorporates a public park to embrace its location on the waterfront, reconnecting the river trail with Napanee’s downtown core.
